Getting Started
Do I need a referral to see Dr Smit?
While a referral is not strictly required, having one from your GP or specialist can be helpful as it provides valuable background information about your condition. Some medical aids may require a referral for specialist consultations, so we recommend checking with your medical aid provider.
How do I book an appointment?
You can book an appointment by calling our practice on 021 851 1556 or emailing info@helderbergpainclinic.co.za. Our practice manager, Yvonne Maserati, will assist you with scheduling and answer any questions you may have.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Please bring your ID document or passport, medical aid card (if applicable), any relevant medical records, scans, or X-rays, a list of current medications, and referral letter (if you have one). It's also helpful to prepare a summary of your pain history.
How long is the initial consultation?
Initial consultations typically last 45-60 minutes. This allows Dr Smit to conduct a thorough assessment of your condition, review your medical history, perform a physical examination, and discuss potential treatment options with you.
Treatment
What conditions do you treat?
We treat a wide range of chronic pain conditions, including back and neck pain, sciatica and radiculopathy, facet joint pain, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, arthritis and joint pain, neuropathic pain, post-surgical pain, complex regional pain syndrome, and headaches and migraines.
Are the procedures painful?
Most procedures are performed under local anaesthesia with sedation available for patient comfort. Dr Smit is an experienced anaesthetist and sedation practitioner, ensuring you are as comfortable as possible throughout any procedure. Most patients experience minimal discomfort during and after treatment.
How long does it take for treatments to work?
This varies depending on the treatment and individual factors. Some patients experience immediate relief, while others may notice gradual improvement over days or weeks. During your consultation, Dr Smit will explain what you can expect from your specific treatment plan.
How long does radiofrequency treatment last?
Radiofrequency ablation typically provides relief for 9-18 months, though this varies between individuals. Some patients experience relief for longer periods. The procedure can be repeated if pain returns.
Will I need multiple treatments?
Many chronic pain conditions benefit from a multimodal approach combining several treatment types. Your treatment plan will be tailored to your specific needs and may include a combination of procedures, physical therapy, and lifestyle modifications.
Practical Matters
Do you accept medical aid?
Yes, we work with all major medical aids. We will submit claims on your behalf. Please note that you are responsible for any co-payments or amounts not covered by your medical aid. We recommend confirming your benefits with your medical aid before your appointment.
Where are you located?
We are located at Paardevlei @ Cure Day Hospital, Paardevlei Specialist Medical Center, 18 Gardner Williams Ave, Paardevlei, 7130. There is ample parking available at the facility.
What are your practice hours?
Our practice hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm. We are closed on weekends and public holidays.
Can I drive myself home after a procedure?
If you receive sedation during your procedure, you will not be able to drive for 24 hours. Please arrange for someone to drive you home. For procedures performed under local anaesthesia only, you may be able to drive yourself.
About Our Approach
What makes Helderberg Pain Clinic different?
At Helderberg Pain Clinic, you work with one doctor—Dr Louis Smit—throughout your entire journey. Unlike large clinic networks where you might see different practitioners each visit, here you build a genuine relationship with your physician who truly understands your condition and your goals. We also take a holistic, biopsychosocial approach, addressing not just the physical aspects of pain but also the psychological and lifestyle factors.
What is biopsychosocial pain management?
The biopsychosocial model recognises that pain is influenced by biological factors (physical structures and processes), psychological factors (thoughts, emotions, and behaviours), and social factors (relationships, work, and lifestyle). Effective treatment addresses all three dimensions, not just the physical symptoms.
